Walking for the medieval narrow streets of Radicofani...

The village of Radicofani is worth a careful visit. It is a real pleasure to walk around its medieval centre, sourrounded by stone walls full of history and ancient echoes. The city was at first property of the Abbadia San Salvatore monks, that bought the village in 973. After it passes under the influence of Siena, around the 1000 b.C., and only later the Granduca of Florence expanded his power to this territories, in the 1559 with the famous Cateau Cambresis pax.

A stronghold in the southern Tuscany

Radicofani is a small village situated at about 60 km southeast from Siena, near the boundaries with Lazio region. Is the last village of the Tuscan Via Francigena, down on the road to Rome, just few kilometers away from the famous Abbadia San Salvatore. The surroundings  landscape, which is dominated by Mount Amiata to the west, overlooking the Chiana Valley and Umbria, is rich in detail, including Lake Bolsena and the Central Appennines.

The Via Francigena is a set of roads that since the ancient times were walked by the Christian pilgrims directed to Rome. The name “Via Francigena”, derives from the word “Francia”, which in Italian design the French territories that the Via Francigena crosses. The route starts from Canterbury and arrives to Rome, according to the memories left by the Bishop Sigeric, in the year 980. The Via Francigena in Tuscany has a length of 394 km, starting from Passo della Cisa and join Lazio near Ponte a Rigo. Along the Via Francigena in Tuscany born towns, cities, monasteries, centres of trade and religious gatherings. Via Francigena was a road fulfilled of religious and economic values. Thanks to Via Francigena many village were founded and developed ecnomically precisely thanks to the presence of the Via and the pilgrims.

Fierucola in San Baronto!

One of the most traditional fest in San Baronto, is the “Fierucola”, a market of local artisanal products from furniture to gastronomy, from wine to oil. Most of the products proceed from local farms and are made following ecological and biological standard of production. The fest took place on the second and the last Saturday and Sunday of August.
